As a major figure in functional analysis, you introduced methods of algebraic topology that were some of the most revolutionary advances in operator theory. These methods now form a central cornerstone of the theory and injected the entire area with a new vitality that has persisted to the present day. Your long history of service to the mathematics community and contributions to the advancement of mathematics in many capacities through the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the US National Science Foundation, and other venues are truly remarkable."
